The Surat Municipal Corporation's recruitment announces a total of 2,295 vacancies across various cadres with category-wise reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC), Unreserved (General), and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), including 33% horizontal reservation for women.
SMC Recruitment 2026 Eligibility Criteria
- Mechanical / Automobile Engineer: B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical or Automobile Engineering from a recognised university, plus basic computer knowledge and Gujarati/Hindi proficiency.
- Electrical Engineer: B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from a recognised university, plus required computer knowledge and Gujarati/Hindi proficiency.
- Town Planning Officer / Planner: M.Arch/M.E. (Civil)/B.Arch/B.E. (Civil) and a PG degree/diploma in City/Town/Regional Planning or membership of the Institute of Town Planners after passing its exam, with basic computer knowledge and Gujarati/Hindi.
- Food Safety Officer: Master’s degree in specified subjects (e.g., Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Technology/Science & Technology, Food & Nutrition, Microbiology, Dairy Technology, Agriculture, Horticulture, Biotechnology, Life Science, etc.), or a one‑year PG Diploma in Food Safety & Quality Assurance, or BE/B.Tech in specified Food/Dairy/Biotech/Oil/Processing disciplines, or a 4‑year degree in Medicine/Veterinary/Fisheries/Animal Science, plus basic computer knowledge and Gujarati/Hindi.
- X-Ray Technician: Bachelor’s degree in Science from a recognised university and passed X‑Ray Technician course from a Government institute or recognised medical college, plus basic computer knowledge and Gujarati/Hindi

SMC Recruitment 2026 Age Limit
- For Surat Municipal Corporation Recruitment 2025-26, the upper age limit is generally 35 years for most posts and 45 years for some higher posts, with relaxations as per Gujarat government rules.
- Most technical/specialist posts (Engineers, Food Safety Officer, X‑Ray Technician, etc.): maximum 35 years; age relaxable for reserved category candidates (SC/ST/OBC, etc.) as per applicable rules.
- Certain senior Town Planning/Planning Officer posts: maximum 45 years, with similar category-wise relaxations.
- For existing Surat Municipal Corporation employees, the upper age limit condition is not applied in some cadres, as specifically mentioned in the notification.
SMC Recruitment 2026 Application Fee
- For General / OBC (Creamy Layer) candidates, the application fee is ₹500 per application.
- For OBC (Non‑Creamy Layer) / SC / ST candidates, the application fee is ₹250.
- PwD (Persons with Disabilities / Divyang) candidates are exempted from payment of any application fee.

Selection Process
- Shortlisting for test/interview: Based on eligibility and criteria fixed by SMC for each cadre, candidates are shortlisted for the next stage, which may include a written test, skill test and/or interview depending on the post.
- Written examination / skill test: For technical and specialist posts (Engineers, Town Planning, Food Safety Officer, X‑Ray Technician etc.), SMC can conduct a written exam and/or practical/skill test to assess subject knowledge and job-related skills.
- Interview (for selected cadres): Certain higher or specialist posts may also have an interview/viva‑voce round in addition to the written test, as decided by the corporation.
- Preparation of merit list and waiting list: A merit list (and waiting list) is prepared based on marks obtained in the written/skill test and interview (if held), following reservation rules and post-wise weightage notified by SMC.
- Document verification and final appointment: Shortlisted candidates are called for verification of original certificates, and appointments are issued from the approved list/waiting list subject to successful verification and medical fitness where applicable.
